Glossary

The UCan lexicon.

Every acronym, every framework — decoded in one place.

UCan Passport to Prosperity

Portable digital identity

A verified, portable digital identity built for every farmer, artisan or hub worker — bundling ID, certifications, transactions and reputation into one profile the person owns.

Enterprise Ladder

A four-rung business path

A productised micro-enterprise with four rungs — Struggling, Stable, Successful, Significant — each with defined cost, ROI and off-take. UCan currently runs 10 ladders across Food, Shelter, Security, Culture and Waste.

Rung

A single step on a ladder

One stage of an Enterprise Ladder, with its own cost, ROI, playbook, tools and off-taker match. Farmers climb one rung at a time; capital follows the rung.

EPO 4Rs

Risk, Revenue, Reputation, Regeneration

The four principles every UCan intervention is measured against: de-risked, revenue-generating, reputation-building for the household, and regenerative for the land and community.

4M Model

Money · Materials · Methods · Market

The four inputs UCan ensures every hub can deliver before a farmer starts: seed money, physical materials, proven methods and a guaranteed market.

4S Journey

Struggling → Stable → Successful → Significant

UCan's household progression framework, mirrored on every Enterprise Ladder. It's how impact is measured, and how capital is unlocked at each stage.

Ubuntu Village

A UCan-standard neighbourhood

A cluster of Hemp Khaya homes, community facilities and shared enterprise infrastructure — the physical expression of Ubuntu Neighbourhoods.

Poverty Stoplight

50-indicator household self-assessment

A visual, household-led self-assessment across 50 dimensions of poverty. Red, yellow, green — a shared map of what to fix next.

SIB

Social Impact Bond

Outcomes-based finance — government pays only for verified reductions in dependency. The SASSA SIB targets 100,000 SRD beneficiaries at R4,200/person/year.

Off-taker

A guaranteed buyer

A contracted buyer for hub production (Shoprite Freshmark, Pesto Princess and others). Every rung has a buyer before it plants.

Hub

A UCan operating node

A pack-shed, farm cluster and training site run by a Hub Partner under the UCan standard. 200 hubs are planned across SA and SADC.

OneBridge Fund

UCan's capital vehicle

The blended-finance vehicle that channels DFI, philanthropic and government capital into hubs and farmers against verified impact.
